Fate storm history: hail and wind reports
You remember the night the hail came, you just cannot remember the date. Here is the public record: every hail and thunderstorm wind report NOAA logged within ten miles of central Fate since 2023, with the date, the reported size and how far the report was from the middle of town.

Hail and wind around Fate, from the record
The archive below holds 35 hail and thunderstorm wind reports inside ten miles of central Fate, drawn from the Rockwall, Collin, Hunt, Kaufman and Dallas county files for 2023 through the 2026 archive published on September 1, 2026.
Two dates do most of the work. On April 27, 2026, hail was reported in Fate itself at 1.5 inches and, from a report less than a mile from the center of town, at up to 2.75 inches, with 2 inch hail at Blackland and 1.75 inch hail south of Rockwall the same evening. The National Weather Service office in Fort Worth described that day's supercells as producing numerous reports of large hail up to teacup size across North Texas, with the biggest stones in northeast Dallas, Rockwall and Hunt counties. Before that, June 11, 2023 brought 2.25 inch hail reported near Fate and 2.75 inch hail in Royse City, with 2 inch stones in Rockwall.
Wind shows up too, in smaller print but with real consequences for ridge caps and lifted shingles. The strongest gust in the record is a measured 76 mph at Lavon on May 28, 2024. Estimated gusts around 70 to 75 mph appear near Rockwall and Blackland that same evening, at Josephine in March 2025 and at Lavon in June 2023, and the Rockwall airport measured a gust in the upper fifties in May 2025.
Read all of it with the scope in mind. Each entry is where a report started, not the footprint of the storm. Reports are concentrated where people are around to make them. The current year is incomplete and NOAA revises entries after publication. And most importantly, a report near your street is a reason to look at your roof, never proof that your roof was damaged.

How to use a date
What the storm record means for your roof
A date is useful in three separate ways, and they work best in this order. None of them replaces somebody on the roof, which is what an assessment for hail and storm damage is for.
- Match the timing to what you noticed
If the ceiling stain, the shingle in the flower bed or the dented gutter appeared in the same week as a reported storm, you have a plausible cause and a date to work from. If what you noticed does not line up with anything in the record, that is worth knowing too, because it points at wear, a detail failure or an older event rather than the storm everyone is talking about.
- Look at the roof with the size in mind
Around an inch is the anchor. That is where the weather service calls a storm severe, and it is roughly where granule loss and shingle bruising start to show up. The reports here run well past two inches, and larger stones mean harder impacts and a better chance of damage on more than one slope. So the reported size tells you how hard to look and where: soft metal first from the ground, then the slopes that faced the storm, then the whole roof if anything turns up.
- Keep the roof question and the insurance question separate
Find out what is actually wrong with the roof before deciding whether there is a claim to make. The two get tangled together after a storm, usually by whoever is knocking on doors, and the result is claims filed on roofs nobody has properly looked at. The roof insurance guide covers what Texas law settles and what your own policy decides.
A nearby report never proves damage at a specific address, and a quiet record never proves a roof came through fine. Hail is patchy at street scale, and reports only exist where somebody was there to make one.
Fate storm history questions
There is a report a mile from my house. Does that mean my roof is damaged?
No, and this is the most important sentence on the page. NOAA records the point where a report started, not the area the hail covered, and hail size can change dramatically over a few hundred feet. Your roof also matters: its age, its pitch, which way the slopes face and what shape it was in before. The record tells you a storm was here on a specific date. Only a look at your roof tells you what it did to your roof.
Why are there no reports for my street?
Because reports come from people. Trained spotters, law enforcement, the public and airport instruments generate these entries, so the record is thickest where there are eyes and thinnest where there are not. An empty spot on the map is missing information, not evidence of a quiet night. If your roof changed after a storm, the absence of a nearby report does not settle anything.
How far back should I bother looking?
For an active question about damage, the last two or three years is usually the useful window, because carriers care about a specific date of loss and older damage gets harder to attribute. For understanding your roof, the whole record is worth a minute: a roof that sat through 2023 and 2026 has taken two serious hail events, and that shows up as accumulated wear even where nothing failed outright. The repair or replace guide explains how that history feeds into the decision.
Can I use this page for my insurance claim?
You can use it to find and name a date, which is genuinely useful when a carrier asks for a date of loss, and each record links to the original NOAA entry. What it is not is evidence about your property. Your claim will turn on what an adjuster sees on your roof and what your policy says, not on a database entry. Bring the date, and let the roof provide the rest.

Something changed on your roof after a storm?
Send the address, the date from the record that fits and what you noticed afterward. Photographs help if you have them, and a look at the roof is what turns a storm date into an answer.
